Chris Levine was born in Ottawa in 1960 and works with light as a material — laser, hologram, LED and lenticular print — often in combination with sound and meditation. In 2004 the island of Jersey commissioned him to make a holographic portrait of Elizabeth II, for which she sat twice; between exposures she rested with her eyes closed, and the still image Levine captured in that moment, Lightness of Being, became one of the most reproduced portraits of her reign. He has also made portraits of Kate Moss and Grace Jones, large light installations, and long-running work with the Eden Project and with meditation practice.
Lightness of Being and its variants dominate the market and exist across an unusually wide range of formats — lenticular, diasec-mounted photographic print, screenprint with diamond dust, small open editions and large limited ones — so establishing format, size, edition and finish is essential before any valuation. Certificates from the studio are expected. Lenticular and face-mounted works cannot be repaired if scratched or delaminated, and the surface is the work, so condition dominates. Light-based installations are sold with their equipment and technical specification.
