Art News: Global Art Events, the Fairs and Auctions to Watch Into 2027
By Whitebank Fine Art
The international art calendar is at its busiest between now and Christmas. Art Basel Paris opens at the Grand Palais this week, New York holds its November evening sales, Frieze stages its first fair in the Middle East, and the year ends in Miami. Here are the dates for the main fairs, auctions and exhibitions around the world from now until the summer of 2027, and what they mean if you are thinking of selling.
October: Art Basel Paris
Art Basel Paris is open to the public at the Grand Palais from Friday 23 to Sunday 25 October, after preview days for collectors from 20 October. More than 200 galleries from 41 countries are taking part, nearly 30 of them for the first time, and the fair's programme of public art spreads across the city all week.
On 22 October Ibrahim Mahama opens The Harvest Season at the Fondation Cartier on the place du Palais-Royal, filling its new building until 28 February 2027. He heads our list of the top 10 contemporary African artists of 2026.
November: Cologne, Paris, Shanghai and New York
- Art Cologne, 5 to 8 November. Founded in 1967, it is the oldest art fair of its kind.
- Paris Photo, 12 to 15 November, back at the Grand Palais. It is the largest fair for photography, the subject of our review of the photography market in 2026.
- West Bund Art & Design, Shanghai, in mid-November, the anchor of the city's autumn art week.
- Frieze Abu Dhabi, 19 to 22 November, at Manarat Al Saadiyat in the Saadiyat Cultural District. It replaces Abu Dhabi Art and is Frieze's first fair in the Middle East, with more than 80 galleries from 37 countries and regions.
- The Venice Biennale closes on 22 November. Its main exhibition, In Minor Keys, was conceived by the Cameroonian curator Koyo Kouoh (1967–2025) and realised by the team she chose.

The New York sales on 18 November
Three evening sales fall on Wednesday 18 November. Phillips opens the night at 5pm with its Modern & Contemporary Art Evening Sale at 432 Park Avenue.
At 6pm Sotheby's offers Legendary: The Blaquier-Arrieta Collection, a single-owner sale of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist pictures. It includes Camille Pissarro's view of the Place du Théâtre-Français and the avenue de l'Opéra in winter sun, estimated at $30 million to $40 million; Renoir's En Canot at $25 million to $35 million; and Monet's Le Jardin des Tuileries at $15 million to $20 million. A Cézanne, Arlequin, and a Van Gogh, Châtaigniers en fleurs, are offered with estimates on request.
Sotheby's Modern Evening Auction follows at 7pm, led by Paul Signac's Collioure. Les Balancelles at $12 million to $18 million and Degas's Trois danseuses (Jupes jaunes) at $10 million to $15 million, with Mary Cassatt's Summertime at $7 million to $10 million. In its Now & Contemporary Evening Auction, Roy Lichtenstein's Reflections on "Painter and Model" is estimated at $20 million to $30 million. Christie's holds its 20th and 21st Century evening sales in New York in the same season.
Results like these set the reference prices for the year ahead. Our review of Impressionist and Modern art in 2026 covers the records so far.
December: Miami and the Turner Prize
Art Basel Miami Beach runs from 4 to 6 December at the Miami Beach Convention Center, at the centre of Miami Art Week, 1 to 7 December, when satellite fairs open across the city.

Later in 2027 Tate Britain opens its David Hockney exhibition on 7 October, with more than 200 works.
What the calendar means if you are selling
Fairs and auctions do different jobs. At a fair, dealers sell what is on their stands and the prices are rarely published. At auction the result is public, and it becomes the figure every later sale of a similar work is measured against. That is why the November sales in New York matter well beyond the works in them.
The timing matters too. Auction houses build their evening sales months in advance, so works for the spring sales in London and New York are usually chosen over the winter. Prints and editions are less tied to the calendar: they sell in day and online sales throughout the year, and their value rests on what the same image, in the same condition, has made recently.
If you own a work and are thinking of selling, this season or next, send us photographs for a free valuation. There is no obligation to sell, and we act for you rather than for the saleroom.
