Art News: Art Events in 2027, the Fairs, Biennials and Major Shows

By Whitebank Fine Art

2027 is the summer the art world goes to Germany. documenta, held every five years, and Skulptur Projekte Münster, held every ten, open a day apart in June, as they do once a decade, with the Berlin Biennale and the Liverpool Biennial opening the same month. Art Basel, Frieze and TEFAF have published most of their dates, and London has a year of big exhibitions, from Monet at Tate Modern to Gainsborough's 300th anniversary and David Hockney's 90th birthday. documenta 16 and Skulptur Projekte

documenta 16 runs in Kassel from 12 June to 19 September, directed by Naomi Beckwith, chief curator of the Guggenheim in New York. It is the first documenta since 2022, and its traditional home is the Fridericianum on the Friedrichsplatz, where the first documenta was held in 1955.

Skulptur Projekte opens in Münster the next day and runs until 3 October. It is the sixth edition and the fiftieth anniversary of the show, which fills the city with sculpture and public projects every ten years. This time it is directed by the Zagreb curatorial collective What, How & for Whom (WHW), and Hew Locke and Oscar Murillo are among the first artists named.

The 14th Berlin Biennale, curated by Vasyl Cherepanyn, opens in June as well, so Berlin, Kassel and Münster can be seen in one trip.

Is there a Venice Biennale in 2027?

Yes, but it is the architecture exhibition. The 20th Venice Architecture Biennale, curated by the Chinese architects Wang Shu and Lu Wenyu, runs from 8 May to 21 November. The art exhibition alternates with it, so the next art biennale is due in 2028.

Art fairs in 2027

Art Basel opens the year in Doha with Art Basel Qatar, 28 to 30 January, then Hong Kong, 25 to 27 March, and Basel itself, 17 to 20 June. Paris, usually at the Grand Palais in October, and Miami Beach, usually in December, have not yet given their 2027 dates.

Frieze is in Los Angeles from 25 to 28 February and at The Shed in New York from 12 to 16 May. Frieze London and Frieze Masters are usually held in Regent's Park in October; their 2027 dates are still to come.

TEFAF Maastricht, the leading fair for Old Masters, antiques and works of art, runs from 13 to 18 March, and TEFAF New York from 14 to 18 May.

In London, the year starts with the London Art Fair, for modern and contemporary art, at the Business Design Centre in Islington from 20 to 24 January.

Biennials around the world

Sharjah Biennial 17, What remains, sits restive, runs from 21 January to 13 June across eleven venues in the emirate, curated by Angela Harutyunyan and Paula Nascimento.

The Liverpool Biennial, from 5 June to 12 September, is co-curated by Lucía Sanromán and Aimee Harrison and takes childhood and youth as its theme.

The 19th Istanbul Biennial, curated by Liu Ding and Carol Yinghua Lu, runs from 18 September to 14 November.

If you are thinking of selling in 2027

The fairs and the big exhibitions set the rhythm of the art market. The main auction weeks are built around them: Hong Kong in March, New York in May and November, London in March, June and October, and Paris around Art Basel Paris. A major museum show also puts an artist in front of collectors for months at a time. If you own a work by an artist with a big exhibition in 2027, from Hockney and Gainsborough to Monet, Munch or Rembrandt's prints, it is worth thinking about timing now, as the leading spring and summer sales are planned months in advance.

If you own a work by one of these artists and are thinking of selling, send us photographs for a free valuation. There is no obligation to sell, and we act for you rather than for the saleroom.
