Charming Baker was born in 1964, worked for years in commercial illustration and design before showing as an artist, and is best known for a deliberate act of vandalism against his own work: finished paintings are drilled, cut, shot at or otherwise damaged, so that the violence is part of the picture rather than an accident that befell it. The underlying painting is traditional and highly capable, which is precisely what makes the intervention read.
Unique paintings lead the market, with sculpture and a body of screenprint and mixed-media editions below them. The deliberate damage is the thing that most often confuses a condition assessment: holes, cuts and scorching are original and must not be treated as faults, while genuine later damage exists alongside them and does affect value.
