Bio
Jamie Hewlett was born in Horsham, West Sussex, in 1968. He co-created the comic Tank Girl with Alan Martin in 1988, and in 1998 co-created Gorillaz with Damon Albarn — a band whose members exist only as his drawings, designed and animated for every album, video and live show since. Alongside that work he has exhibited paintings and prints under his own name.
Prints and editions are the bulk of what comes to market, many featuring the Gorillaz characters, alongside original drawings and paintings, which are much scarcer. As with any artist connected to music, a signed and numbered edition from a recognised publisher needs telling apart from posters and merchandise of the same images. Original comic art and production drawings are a separate category again, and where they came from, and when, is the first question to answer.
Bob Godfrey, Deadline and Tank Girl
As a teenager in 1983 Hewlett worked in the Wardour Street studio of the animator Bob Godfrey. At Northbrook College in Worthing he, Alan Martin and Philip Bond made a fanzine called Atomtan, which brought them to Brett Ewins and to his new magazine, Deadline, where Tank Girl began in 1988.
MGM made Tank Girl into a film in 1995. After Deadline closed in 1996 he worked in advertising and television design before Gorillaz.
Designer of the Year, Monkey and The Suggestionists
Gorillaz made his name well beyond comics. The Design Museum named him Designer of the Year in 2006, and the same spring he and Damon Albarn shared the Ivor Novello award for songwriters of the year. In 2007 he designed the sets, animation and costumes for Monkey: Journey to the West at the Manchester International Festival, and the BBC opened its coverage of the Beijing Olympics in 2008 with his animated Monkey.
His first exhibition as a painter, The Suggestionists, opened at the Saatchi Gallery in London in November 2015 and went on to New York the following May, alongside the series Honey, Tarot and Pines made that year. Taschen published a monograph of 25 years of his work in 2017, and in 2023 he launched his own website with Warriors, his first collection of limited editions, drawn from 27 years of work.
