Justin de Verteuil was born in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, in 1990, studied at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, and lives and works in Düsseldorf. His figurative oil paintings deal with the individual in a complex, interpersonal society, drawing freely on biographical cues to explore relationships and the dynamics of colour, figure and space. Marked by a tension between proximity and distance, they show people in multilayered group settings or as isolated figures, in spaces whose atmosphere extends the inner lives of their inhabitants and leaves room for the viewer's own projections, between the familiar and the mundane and the strange. His international breakthrough came in 2023, with Sweet Odour at ADZ in Lisbon and Nexus with Sies + Höke in Düsseldorf. Sies + Höke showed Magpie on a Morning Gallows in 2024 and 2025, López de la Serna CAC in Madrid presented Planet Caravan, and in 2026 the Esker Foundation in Calgary showed sie will / muse. zur marionette and yee society in Hong Kong showed Before and Again.
