Khari Turner was born in Milwaukee in 1991 and works in New York, making portraits and figures in which the material carries the subject: he mixes water collected from rivers and coastlines connected to the history of the Middle Passage — the Hudson, sites on the African coast — into the ink and paint. The faces are built from charcoal, ink and acrylic in fluid washes, frequently without fixed features, and the method is inseparable from what the pictures are about.
Unique works on canvas and paper are the market. The washed, water-based technique makes condition a real consideration: these are absorbent surfaces with unfixed passages, they are sensitive to moisture and light, and they should be framed to conservation standard rather than casually.
