Patrick Rubinstein was born in France in 1960 and makes kinetic works built from vertical or horizontal blades, each face carrying part of a different image, so that a single piece resolves into two or three distinct pictures as the viewer moves across it. The subjects are drawn from pop culture and the history of art — musicians, film icons, Warhol and Lichtenstein motifs — and the appeal is as much mechanical as pictorial.
The construction governs everything. These are built objects with moving-image effects that depend on precise alignment, so any distortion, warping or damage to the blades affects the work fundamentally and is not a cosmetic issue. They are also heavy and awkward to crate. Works are issued as unique pieces and in editions, and the difference is not always obvious from the front, so the reverse, the plaque and the certificate need reading. Photographs for valuation should be taken square on and from both angles.
