What a work by Sandra Blow is worth
Send photographs and whatever paperwork came with it. The first question is what the work actually is — edition or unique, when, and in what condition — because everything else follows from the answer. Bio
Sandra Blow (1925–2006) was born in London and studied at Saint Martin's School of Art from 1941 to 1946, where she met Lucian Freud, John Minton and Francis Bacon, then spent a short time at the Royal Academy Schools before travelling to Italy and enrolling at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Rome. There she met the painter Alberto Burri, her partner for a few years, and his use of rough, discarded materials stayed with her for the rest of her life. They worked together in Paris in 1949, but she returned to Britain in 1950 to find her own way, and became one of the pioneers of British abstract painting in that decade. Her works are characteristically large and colourful abstract collages, combining paint with torn paper and other discarded materials.
Paintings, collages, works on paper and prints all appear. Collage elements can lift, tear or discolour with time, so condition should be checked closely, and works on paper are sensitive to light. Labels on the back from exhibitions or the gallery that sold the work help to date it.
