TIDE valuation

TIDE is Tatsuhiro Ide, born in Japan in 1984, and almost the whole body of work proceeds from one character: a cartoon cat that functions as the artist's alter ego, most often curled in a cat bed or sitting with its arms folded in frank bad temper. The compositions are pared back and largely monochrome, and the settings are drawn with the density of a children's bedtime book or the hand-painted backgrounds of an old cartoon, so the flat character sits against a deliberately elaborate world. He has shown in Tokyo, Seoul, New York and London.
The making is more varied than the monochrome palette suggests — gestural spray, rough brushwork and soft airbrushed passages appear in the same picture — and that mixture is the first thing to look at in any condition assessment, because sprayed and airbrushed areas behave differently from brushed ones and show handling sooner. Unique paintings on canvas lead, with works on paper and editions below them. The secondary market is active but young, so acquisition date and documentation carry real weight in a valuation.
