Bio
Werner Bronkhorst was born in Pretoria, South Africa, in 2001 and is based in Sydney. His best-known works set minutely painted figures — skiers, climbers, surfers, swimmers — against thick, three-dimensional grounds of paint built up with materials such as marble dust, so that a slab of impasto becomes a mountainside or a breaking wave. Videos of the process, shared online, brought the work to a very large audience in a short time. He also makes charcoal drawings of cars overlaid with text.
Originals are the scarcer part of what circulates, with editions — including prints that reproduce the textured grounds — making up much of the rest. With a following built so quickly online, provenance matters: an original should come with the gallery's or the studio's documentation, and an edition should be checked against the official release. The heavy impasto is vulnerable to knocks and to pressure in transit, so the condition of the raised surface and the way a work has been crated are real concerns.
Pretoria, Sydney and the collaborations
Bronkhorst grew up in a family of athletes, training as a runner while he painted, and finished school at Pretoria Boys High School. A gap year in Sydney became a move there at eighteen, and he worked as a furniture designer before turning to art full time in 2022.
Much of his recent work has come through collaborations: a charcoal Porsche 911 shown at the 2024 Australian Grand Prix, three racing-car sculptures with TAG Heuer in 2025, a series of golfers with the golf brand Malbon, released as originals and prints for the 2025 Ryder Cup, and a hand-painted helmet for Lando Norris's 150th Grand Prix. In August 2025 his painting Fish in Water, eight Olympic swimmers in a competition pool, was sold at auction for the World Aquatics Foundation. The collaborations also produced limited-edition prints and merchandise, which are separate from the originals and should be described as what they are.
