Werner Bronkhorst was born in Pretoria, South Africa, in 2001 and is based in Sydney. His best-known works set minutely painted figures — skiers, climbers, surfers, swimmers — against thick, three-dimensional grounds of paint built up with materials such as marble dust, so that a slab of impasto becomes a mountainside or a breaking wave. Videos of the process, shared online, brought the work to a very large audience in a short time. He also makes charcoal drawings of cars overlaid with text.
Originals are the scarcer part of what circulates, with editions — including prints that reproduce the textured grounds — making up much of the rest. With a following built so quickly online, provenance matters: an original should come with the gallery's or the studio's documentation, and an edition should be checked against the official release. The heavy impasto is vulnerable to knocks and to pressure in transit, so the condition of the raised surface and the way a work has been crated are real concerns.
