Albert Willem is a self-taught painter, born in Belgium in 1979. His paintings fill the canvas with small, busy figures caught in the comedy and tragedy of ordinary life — a brawl at a wedding, dancing at a funeral, a packed beach, a snowbound village — in a naive style that draws openly on Pieter Bruegel the Elder, James Ensor and L. S. Lowry.
Original paintings are the main event, and because the work has come to market only recently, documentation matters: a painting should come with the gallery's or the artist's paperwork, and its title, date and dimensions should match it. Prints and editions are a separate, more accessible category. The pictures are dense with small detail, so surface condition and any retouching show more readily than they would on a looser painting.
