Adrian Wiszniewski was born in Glasgow in 1958 to Polish parents, trained first as an architect and then at Glasgow School of Art, and emerged in the early 1980s with Peter Howson, Ken Currie and Steven Campbell as one of the New Glasgow Boys. Where the others painted muscle and violence, Wiszniewski painted languid, dreaming young men in gardens and interiors, surrounded by foliage and pattern, in a flowing decorative line that owes something to Matisse and to Art Nouveau. He has worked across painting, printmaking, ceramics, stained glass, furniture and film, and lives in Renfrewshire.
A principally British and Scottish market, led by the large 1980s paintings, which are the historically significant part of the output and the period institutions collected. Later work is a broader field. Wiszniewski draws prolifically and the works on paper — crayon, ink, gouache — are numerous and are the accessible end. He is also a substantial printmaker in woodcut, etching and screenprint. Large canvases from the 1980s are frequently on unprimed or lightly primed grounds, so staining and surface condition are worth examining.
