Alice Teichert is a Paris-born painter who trained in Belgium and France, has lived in Canada since 1984 and works principally in abstraction derived from the physical act of writing. The paintings use the gesture of script — its rhythm, pressure, direction and spacing — without producing words, so what remains is the movement rather than the message, worked in layered oil and mixed media across the surface. She has taught and exhibited principally in Canada, and the work sits within a long tradition of calligraphic abstraction that runs from the post-war informel painters through to contemporary practice.
A specialist market, principally Canadian, developed through gallery representation rather than the auction rooms, and comparables are therefore thin: retail gallery prices and any secondary value can diverge considerably, and provenance to the original gallery is the strongest documentation most works carry. Unique paintings on canvas and panel are the substance of the output, alongside works on paper. Layered oil and mixed-media surfaces on absorbent grounds should not be varnished, and matt passages mark easily. This is a name where a current valuation is worth taking rather than assuming.
Belgium, Valence and Toronto
Teichert was born in Paris in 1959 and grew up in Belgium, where she studied music and philosophy as well as art, and she took her diploma at the École des Beaux-Arts in Valence in 1984. She settled in Toronto that year, and between 1985 and 1989 the critics Clement Greenberg, Kenworth Moffett and Karen Wilkin all visited her studio there.
The script in the paintings comes from medieval manuscripts and musical notation, and alongside them she makes text works, prints and performance. A monograph by Dagmar Täube was published by Hirmer in 2017, she was elected to the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts in 2024, and her work is in the MacLaren Art Centre, Global Affairs Canada and the Musée de Valence. She works from a studio in Port Hope, Ontario, and shows with Oeno Gallery and Peter Robertson Gallery.
