Liorah Tchiprout is a British painter and printmaker who works from figures she builds by hand — dolls and puppets, clothed and wigged, which she then arranges, lights and paints from as though they were sitters. The result is a body of figure painting that is neither portraiture nor invention, drawing on Yiddish literature and on the women in the stories she grew up with. She studied printmaking at the University of Brighton and at Camberwell, works in monotype, drypoint and oil, and shows in London.
A young market driven principally by gallery and art-fair sales, with a short auction record, so provenance to the original gallery and to a documented exhibition is the strongest documentation most works carry, and recent comparables matter more than for an established name. Unique oils on canvas and on board lead. Monotypes are unique by definition and are frequently misdescribed as editions; drypoints are published in small numbers. Works on paper in these media are light-sensitive and should be assessed with that in mind.
Brighton, Camberwell and the Summer Exhibition
Tchiprout was born in London in 1992. At the University of Brighton she spent time as an exchange student at the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Jerusalem, and she took her MA in print at Camberwell College of Arts in 2020. The dolls are built on mannequin and wire armatures and modelled on herself, on friends and on characters from books and films, and the Yiddish writers Rachel Korn, Miriam Karpilove and Isaac Bashevis Singer are among the sources she names.
She was selected for Bloomberg New Contemporaries in 2021 and won the Sunny Dupree Family Award for a Woman Artist at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition in 2023, and she has been shortlisted for the Ruth Borchard Self Portrait Prize and the Ingram Prize. Her work is in the Government Art Collection and the Ruth Borchard Collection, and her galleries have included Pippy Houldsworth in London and Marlborough.
