Liorah Tchiprout is a British painter and printmaker who works from figures she builds by hand — dolls and puppets, clothed and wigged, which she then arranges, lights and paints from as though they were sitters. The result is a body of figure painting that is neither portraiture nor invention, drawing on Yiddish literature and on the women in the stories she grew up with. She trained at the Royal Drawing School and at the Slade Summer School, works in monotype, drypoint and oil, and has shown in London with a rapidly growing reputation.
A young market driven principally by gallery and art-fair sales, with a short auction record, so provenance to the original gallery and to a documented exhibition is the strongest documentation most works carry, and recent comparables matter more than for an established name. Unique oils on canvas and on board lead. Monotypes are unique by definition and are frequently misdescribed as editions; drypoints are published in small numbers. Works on paper in these media are light-sensitive and should be assessed with that in mind.
