What a work by Angel Otero is worth
Send photographs and whatever paperwork came with it. The first question is what the work actually is — edition or unique, when, and in what condition — because everything else follows from the answer. A valuation is free, made online from the photographs you send, and it commits you to nothing. We act for sellers across the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States.

Bio
Angel Otero was born in Santurce, Puerto Rico, in 1981 and moved to Chicago in 2004 to study at the School of the Art Institute, where he took his BFA in 2007 and his MFA in 2009. The method his work is known by dates from 2010: he paints representational images in oil on sheets of glass, lets the paint partly dry, then scrapes the hardening layers off and collages these oil skins, torn and folded, onto canvas, where he paints into them again. The images come from everyday objects and rooms loosely based on the home he grew up in, remembered rather than recorded, so the finished pictures hover between abstraction and a domestic scene. He has also made sculpture, shown at Frieze Sculpture in London in 2026. Hauser & Wirth has represented him since 2022, and he divides his time between New York and Puerto Rico.
The oil-skin paintings are unique and often large, with thick, folded passages of dried paint standing off the canvas, so knocks, cracking and lifting at the edges of the skins are the condition points to check. Earlier works include more abstract pictures from the first years of the method. His galleries over the years include Kavi Gupta, Lehmann Maupin, Vito Schnabel and Hauser & Wirth, and a provenance through one of them, with the date, is the starting point.
Santurce, Chicago and the oil skins
His first Los Angeles exhibition with Hauser & Wirth, That First Rain in May, opened in West Hollywood in 2024, and a residency at Hauser & Wirth Somerset led to an exhibition there in 2026.
His work is in the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum.
