What a work by Atsuko Tanaka is worth

Send photographs and whatever paperwork came with it. The first question is what the work actually is — edition or unique, when, and in what condition — because everything else follows from the answer. A valuation is free, made online from the photographs you send, and it commits you to nothing. We act for sellers across the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States.

Bio

Atsuko Tanaka (1932–2005) was born in Osaka. She studied Western painting at the Kyoto Municipal College of Art and then at the Art Institute of the Osaka Municipal Museum of Art, where her friend Akira Kanayama encouraged her to look for new artistic languages and brought her into the Zero Society. During a long stay in hospital in 1953 she began making abstract works of handwritten numbers on hemp cloth, tracing paper and newspaper. In 1955 she joined the Gutai Art Association, and she was one of its central figures until 1965, making works such as Bell of 1955 and Electric Dress of 1956, a dress of coloured light bulbs and tubes. After Gutai she made mainly large paintings in synthetic resin enamel on canvases laid flat, developing motifs of colourful circles and intertwining lines from drawings for Electric Dress and Bell. Interest in her work has grown since the early 2000s, with retrospectives in Ashiya, New York and Vancouver.

Her paintings in enamel and her drawings are the works most often seen. Enamel paint can crack and flake, so condition should be checked closely, and the date of the work and any exhibition history help to place it.
