Ben Frost was born in Brisbane in 1975, studied at the Queensland College of Art and works from Melbourne. His pop art collides cartoon and anime characters, advertising, logos and film villains, often painted directly onto discarded packaging — prescription-drug boxes, fast-food cartons — so that the support carries its own joke about what is being sold to whom. He has exhibited in London, New York, Los Angeles, Berlin and Singapore and has collaborated with fashion houses including Moschino.
Paintings on canvas, the painted packaging pieces and a large number of prints and editions all come to market. The packaging works are unique objects on fragile, often glossy card, so creasing, crushing and surface wear matter a great deal. Editions are identified by size, variant and numbering, and signed editions need telling apart from unsigned reproductions of the popular images.
