Bio
Brice Guilbert was born in Montpellier in 1979 and grew up in Saint-Joseph on Réunion, where he lived from the age of two to fourteen. He studied drawing at the École nationale supérieure des arts visuels de La Cambre in Brussels from 1997 to 2003, and was a drawing assistant there from 2005 to 2011. He is also a musician and has released albums since 2005, among them Firinga (2015) and Ti Robinson (2019), sung in Réunion Creole. Since 2012 he has exhibited paintings and drawings, often in relation to music, and since 2016 he has painted erupting volcanoes. The series, all titled Fournez after the local pronunciation of the Piton de la Fournaise near his childhood home, is made with oil sticks he makes himself, melted and worked with a heat gun on wood into layered, gestural, semi-abstract images. Their moods move from dark to light, recalling walks to the volcano that began at night and ended at daybreak. Pace showed the series in Palo Alto in 2022, and his work has also been shown at Johannes Vogt Gallery in New York.
His paintings are in oil stick on wood, often thickly worked, and there are also drawings. Oil stick stays relatively soft, so check for scuffs and dust and keep a work away from heat. The title, date and gallery invoice should stay with it.
