Send photographs and whatever paperwork came with it. Bio
Catherine Goodman was born in London in 1961. She studied at Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts from 1979 to 1984 and at the Royal Academy Schools from 1984 to 1987, where she won the Royal Academy Gold Medal. In 2000 she co-founded what is now the Royal Drawing School with the then Prince of Wales, now King Charles III, and she is its Founding Artistic Director; her teaching centres on observational drawing. For many years she painted portraits, interiors and city views, from life and from photographs, in the figurative tradition of the School of London. She won the BP Portrait Award in 2002, and the National Portrait Gallery gave her a solo exhibition, Portraits from Life, in 2014. Since joining Hauser & Wirth in 2023 she has turned to large, more abstract oil paintings that begin as charcoal drawings, shown in Los Angeles in 2024. Her work is in the National Portrait Gallery, the Fitzwilliam Museum and the Royal Collection, and she has been the artist trustee of the National Gallery since 2019. She lives in London and Somerset and works in London.
Goodman's work falls into oil paintings, from portraits to large canvases, and drawings, including the charcoal drawings that begin many of her paintings. Charcoal smudges easily, so a drawing should stay framed behind glass, and large canvases should be checked for cracking and knocks to the stretcher. For a portrait, note the sitter's name. A gallery invoice, the title and the date of the work should go with any piece.
