What a work by Sonia Gomes is worth

Send photographs and whatever paperwork came with it. The first question is what the work actually is — edition or unique, when, and in what condition — because everything else follows from the answer. A valuation is free, made online from the photographs you send, and it commits you to nothing. We act for sellers across the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States.

Bio

Sonia Gomes was born in 1948 in Caetanópolis, Minas Gerais, a small town regarded as the birthplace of Brazil's textile industry, to a Black mother and a white father. She first worked in law, then in 1994, at the age of 45, left her legal career to study at the Guignard School of Art in Belo Horizonte. She lives and works in São Paulo. Her sculptures combine second-hand textiles, many of them found or given to her, with everyday materials such as driftwood, wire and furniture, twisted, stretched, tied and bundled into knotty, hanging or contorted forms that carry the histories of the people the fabrics belonged to. She credits her grandmother, and Brazil's festivals, rituals and popular dances, as influences. She was included in All the World's Futures at the 2015 Venice Biennale and took part in the Holy See Pavilion at the Biennale in 2024. Recent solo exhibitions include the Pinacoteca de São Paulo in 2023 and Storm King Art Center and the Louvre-Lens in 2025, and she is represented by Mendes Wood DM, Blum & Poe and Pace Gallery.

Her works are unique sculptures in fabric, lace and wire, some made to hang. Textiles can fade, gather dust and attract moths, so check for these and for loose stitching, and keep a work out of direct sun. The title, date and gallery invoice should stay with it.
