Bio
Daniel Richter was born at Eutin in Schleswig-Holstein in 1962 and spent his twenties in the Hamburg punk and autonomist scene designing record sleeves and posters before enrolling at the art school there under Werner Büttner, and assisting Albert Oehlen. The first paintings were dense, patterned, all-over abstractions. Around 2000 the work turned to figuration and to the pictures he is known for: crowds, fugitives, boats and night-time encounters taken from news photography and lit in the acid greens and reds of a thermal image, so the figures read as heat rather than as flesh. The style changed again later towards flatter, more graphic and more openly erotic compositions. He has taught in Berlin and at the academy in Vienna.
Large oils on canvas are the centre of this market, with works on paper and a print output beneath them, and the three phases — the early abstraction, the figurative night pictures, the later flat manner — are separate propositions rather than one continuous body. The canvases are big, thinly painted in places and heavily worked in others, and the commonest damage is the kind that happens in transit and in stretching rather than with age. Provenance normally runs through his galleries, and title, date and dimensions should match their records.
