Bio
Deborah Roberts was born in Austin, Texas, in 1962, and still lives and works there. She took a BFA at the University of North Texas and an MFA at Syracuse University. Her mixed-media collages combine found and manipulated photographs with drawn and painted passages to build figures of Black children, at first mostly young girls and increasingly Black boys. The work questions the idea of a single, universal standard of beauty and explores race, identity and gender, and the children she depicts are both bound by the histories that define them and free to form their own identities. Her work is in the collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Brooklyn Museum, the Studio Museum in Harlem and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and in 2023 she received the Texas Medal of Arts.
Collages on paper and on canvas both appear, along with prints. Collaged surfaces can lift or crease and are sensitive to light, so condition and framing matter, and a gallery invoice and the date of the work should accompany them.
