Send photographs and whatever paperwork came with it. The first question is what the work actually is — edition or unique, when, and in what condition — because everything else follows from the answer. A valuation is free, made online from the photographs you send, and it commits you to nothing. We act for sellers across the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States.

Bio
Gerwald Rockenschaub was born in Linz in 1952. He studied history, psychology and philosophy at the University of Vienna and then art at the Hochschule für angewandte Kunst there until 1982, and from the early 1980s worked both as an artist and as a DJ. His first solo exhibitions came in 1984, at the Galerie nächst St. Stephan in Vienna and with Vera Munro in Hamburg. His paintings of the mid-1980s, small, precise abstractions, put him among the artists of Neo-Geo, and in 1987 he gave up painting as no longer of its time. Since then he has worked in coloured Plexiglas, vinyl foil, fabric, wall installations and computer-drawn animations, and in intarsia works and reliefs of wood, MDF and acrylic glass that recast old decorative techniques in industrial materials. In 1993 he represented Austria at the Venice Biennale with Andrea Fraser and Christian Philipp Müller, and he was in documenta 12 in 2007. He lives and works in Berlin, and still makes electronic music.
Most of what comes to market is wall work in Plexiglas, foil or wood and acrylic glass, along with editions and works on paper. Acrylic glass scratches and clouds, and adhesive foil can lift or yellow, so surfaces should be checked in good light, and works made for a particular wall or room depend on their installation instructions. The paintings of the 1980s, made before he stopped painting in 1987, are a small and distinct group. He has shown with the Galerie nächst St. Stephan in Vienna since 1984, and with Thaddaeus Ropac.
