Send photographs and whatever paperwork came with it. Bio
Euan Uglow was born in London in 1932 and studied at Camberwell School of Art from 1948 to 1950, then followed William Coldstream to the Slade, where he stayed until 1954. A conscientious objector, he spent two years on community work in place of national service. From Coldstream he took a method of painting from life by repeated measurement, and he made it his own with a measuring instrument of his own design, leaving the small horizontal and vertical marks of his calculations visible in the finished picture. His subjects were the nude, posed in constructed geometric settings, still lifes of fruit and objects, and a few landscapes, and he worked so slowly that a single painting could take years. He taught at the Slade for much of his life, won the John Moores Painting Prize in 1972, and died in London in 2000.
He finished few paintings, so they are scarce, and many are in public collections including Tate and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Drawings and small still lifes appear more often than the large nudes. Catherine Lampert's catalogue of the complete paintings is the reference.
Coldstream, the Slade and the measured nude
He turned down an offer of membership of the Royal Academy in 1961, the year of his first solo exhibition, at the Beaux Arts Gallery in London.
In 1980 he was the first artist in residence at the Cyprus College of Art at Lempa, and after his death the Arts Council toured a retrospective in 2002.
