Gunther Uecker was born in Mecklenburg in 1930 and spent the last days of the war barricading his family home with planks to protect his mother and sister, nailing them shut — an origin he has cited for what followed. From 1957 he drove nails into painted white panels, chairs, pianos and objects, in fields that lean and swirl so that the shadows they throw become the image and shift as the viewer moves. He joined the ZERO group with Mack and Piene in 1961, and continued the nail works, alongside ash and sand paintings and stage design, until his death in Dusseldorf in June 2025, at ninety-five.
The nail reliefs are the market and the ZERO reassessment of the last fifteen years has driven it hard. Condition is unusually decisive: the works depend on an immaculate white surface and on nails standing at their original angles, and bent nails, corrosion, discolouration of the white ground and past overpainting are all common and all materially reduce value — none of it can be corrected invisibly. Nailed objects are unique. There is a substantial output of prints, embossings and works on paper.
Weißensee, Düsseldorf and the Reichstag
Uecker studied at Wismar and then at the art school in Berlin-Weißensee, where he was trained in socialist realism, and after the uprising of 1953 escaped to the West and studied in Düsseldorf under Otto Pankok. With Mack and Piene he worked in joint studios at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam in 1962, and he showed at documenta 4 in 1968 and the Venice Biennale in 1970.
He taught at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf from 1974, as professor from 1976 until 1995, alongside Joseph Beuys and Klaus Rinke. He designed the prayer room in the rebuilt Reichstag in Berlin, completed in 2000, and with Mack, Piene and Mattijs Visser set up the ZERO foundation in 2008. Among his last works were blue stained-glass windows for Schwerin Cathedral.
