Send photographs and whatever paperwork came with it. The first question is what the work actually is — edition or unique, when, and in what condition — because everything else follows from the answer. Bio
Ewa Juszkiewicz was born in Gdańsk in 1984. She studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk from 2004 to 2009 and later took a doctorate at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków. Her paintings start from European portraits of women of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and keep their refined, period technique, while the faces are hidden behind arrangements of hair, fabric, flowers, shells, fruit or foliage, a surrealist device that questions the ideals of female beauty the originals carried. In 2013 she won the Grand Prix at the Bielska Jesień painting biennial, and in 2014 she was included in the book 100 Painters of Tomorrow. She has had solo exhibitions with Gagosian in New York and Beverly Hills and with Almine Rech in London and Paris, a Venice Biennale collateral exhibition at Palazzo Cavanis in 2024, and her first solo museum exhibition at the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza, Madrid, in 2026. Her work is in the Albertina, Vienna, the Musée d'Art Moderne de Paris, the Brooklyn Museum and the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw. She lives and works between Warsaw, New York and Marbella.
Besides unique paintings there are limited-edition prints, such as Untitled (after Elisabeth Vigée Le Brun), an archival pigment print with screenprint varnish on Canson Etching Rag paper, made in an edition of 50 by Powerhouse Arts and Griffin Editions for RxART in 2023, and a 2024 edition with Almine Rech. For a print, note the edition number, publisher, paper and signature, and check for scuffs and fading. For a painting, keep the gallery invoice.
