Bio
Sanya Kantarovsky was born in Moscow in 1982 and moved to the United States as a child; he lives and works in New York. Painting is at the centre of his practice, though he also works in sculpture and animation and as a curator. His figurative paintings, of elongated and often caricatured figures, sit between humour and horror, intimacy and alienation. He has had institutional solo exhibitions at the Aspen Art Museum, the Kunsthalle Basel and the Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo in Turin, and his work is in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago and Tate.
Paintings on canvas and works on paper both appear. A gallery invoice and the date of the work are the first things a buyer asks for; his paintings have been sold through galleries in New York, Europe and Tokyo, and the one that sold the work helps to place it.
