What a work by Fausto Melotti is worth
Send photographs and whatever paperwork came with it. The first question is what the work actually is — edition or unique, when, and in what condition — because everything else follows from the answer. A valuation is free, made online from the photographs you send, and it commits you to nothing. We act for sellers across the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States.

Bio
Fausto Melotti (1901–1986) was born in Rovereto, in northern Italy. He studied physics and mathematics before taking a degree in engineering at the Politecnico di Milano in 1924, then enrolled at the Accademia di Brera in Milan, where he studied sculpture under Adolfo Wildt alongside Lucio Fontana. In Rovereto he took part in the Futurist circle around Fortunato Depero, and in Milan he was close to the young architects of Gruppo 7. In 1935 he showed a series of purely abstract sculptures at the Galleria del Milione in Milan, his most celebrated early work. Through the 1940s and 1950s he worked almost entirely in ceramics and terracotta, and in his later career he made delicate constructions from pieces of metal, alongside ceramics. He was also a poet and a theorist.
The metal constructions are fragile, with fine wires, threads and suspended elements, and should be checked for bends, losses and old repairs; they need expert packing. Ceramics, reliefs and works on paper also appear. The Fondazione Fausto Melotti, set up by his daughter Marta, keeps the archive, and an archive number or certificate is what a buyer will look for.
