Miaz Brothers valuation
Italian brothers whose spray-painted portraits look permanently out of focus.
The Miaz Brothers — Roberto, born in Milan in 1965, and Renato, born there in 1968 — have worked together since they were young and are now based in Valencia. They build large portraits from fine layers of acrylic sprayed by airbrush and aerosol, so that the image appears blurred, as if seen through frosted glass. Their Antimatter series ranges from friends and philosophers to portraits after the painters of the English Restoration, where the familiar Old Master pose dissolves into haze.
Original canvases lead, with editions reproducing the blurred portraits alongside. Because the images are deliberately indistinct, series, title, date and dimensions matched to documentation are what identify a work. The sprayed acrylic surfaces are soft and mark easily, and any retouching is hard to hide on so even and smooth a field, so surface condition matters.
