What a work by George Shaw is worth
Send photographs and whatever paperwork came with it. The first question is what the work actually is — edition or unique, when, and in what condition — because everything else follows from the answer. A valuation is free, made online from the photographs you send, and it commits you to nothing. We act for sellers across the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States.

Bio
George Shaw was born in Coventry in 1966 and grew up on the Tile Hill council estate on the city's edge, the subject of most of his work. He studied Fine Art at Sheffield Polytechnic from 1986 to 1989 and took an MA in Painting at the Royal College of Art in 1998. He paints in Humbrol enamel, the glossy paint usually bought for model trains and aeroplanes, and his pictures show the estate's houses, neglected corners and woodland, empty of people. Exhibitions include What I Did This Summer at Ikon Gallery, Birmingham, in 2003, Ash Wednesday at Wilkinson Gallery, London, in 2005 and The End of the World at Galerie Hussenot, Paris, in 2008. He won the John Moores Prize in 1999 and was shortlisted for the Turner Prize in 2011. From 2014 to 2016 he was Associate Artist at the National Gallery, where My Back to Nature, over fifty paintings and drawings centred on a patch of woodland near the estate, was shown in 2016. His work is in the University of Warwick Art Collection and the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge. He lives in Ilfracombe, Devon.
Besides the enamel paintings there are drawings and print editions: Twelve Short Walks (2005), a portfolio of twelve dust-grain gravures on Magnani paper in a solander box, and The Nearly New Romantic (2022), a lithograph in an edition of 100 published by Hole Editions and The Box Plymouth, signed and numbered on the reverse. Gloss enamel shows scratches clearly, so check the surface. For prints, note the edition number, publisher and signature.
