Jenna Gribbon valuation

Paints her partner and friends in close, candid moments, with a strong sense of being looked at back.

Jenna Gribbon was born in Knoxville, Tennessee, in 1978 and works in New York. Her paintings are intimate, often close-up scenes of her partner, the musician Mackenzie Scott, and of friends — bathing, dressing, lying in bed, performing — painted in a fluid realist manner with occasional passages of fluorescent colour. The work is preoccupied with the act of looking, and with what changes when the person being looked at seems to know it.

Paintings are the main event, from small panels to large canvases, with works on paper and a limited number of editions. Subjects recur, so title, date and dimensions matched to the gallery's records identify a painting. The fluorescent pigments that appear in some works are more sensitive to light than conventional colour, so display conditions and any fading are part of condition.

What a work by Jenna Gribbon is worth

Send photographs and whatever paperwork came with it. The first question is what the work actually is — edition or unique, when, and in what condition — because everything else follows from the answer. A valuation is free, made online from the photographs you send, and it commits you to nothing. We act for sellers across the UK.
