Juno Calypso was born in London in 1989 and makes staged self-portraiture in which she is both photographer and subject, working alone in hotel rooms, treatment salons and — for the later work — a subterranean 1970s bunker house in Las Vegas. The recurring persona, Joyce, is a woman performing the rituals of femininity in rooms designed for couples, and the pictures are funny and unnerving in roughly equal measure. What To Do With A Million Years came from the bunker.
What trades is editioned photographic prints, generally in small runs, along with occasional objects and installation elements. Edition size, print size, process and mounting all need establishing, since the same image is frequently issued in more than one format. The prints are contemporary colour work, often face-mounted or specially framed, and mounting is part of the object rather than a housing for it. Gallery documentation is thorough and should stay with the piece.
Joyce, the honeymoon resort and the awards
Calypso was born in Hackney and studied at Chelsea College of Arts, where she finished a foundation diploma in 2008, and at the London College of Communication, where she took a BA in photography in 2012. Joyce began in hotel rooms as a study of beauty regimes and the rituals of seduction. For The Honeymoon she stayed alone at a couples-only honeymoon resort in the United States.
Joyce shared the British Journal of Photography International Photography Award in 2016, the year she was also one of 24 photographers selected for the Foam Talent Call in Amsterdam, and the Royal Photographic Society gave her its Vic Odden Award in 2018. What to Do with a Million Years was first shown at TJ Boulting in London in 2018 and then in Milan. She makes short films alongside the photographs, among them The Honeymoon Suite of 2015.
