Mehdi Ghadyanloo was born in Tehran in 1981 and painted well over a hundred large public murals across that city from the mid-2000s, mostly architectural illusions — staircases, tunnels, openings onto impossible skies — introduced onto blank concrete in a city with little public art. The studio paintings that followed keep the same vocabulary at gallery scale: flat light, long shadows, small figures in vast constructed spaces, closer to metaphysical painting than to street art.
Unique paintings on canvas are the market, with a limited output of editions. The surfaces are smoothly and evenly painted with large uninterrupted fields, which is unforgiving of condition problems — a scuff or stretcher-bar mark across a flat expanse of sky is conspicuous in a way it would not be on a worked surface. Provenance is generally straightforward through the representing galleries and is worth assembling before a sale.
