What a work by Nathan Oliveira is worth

Send photographs and whatever paperwork came with it. The first question is what the work actually is — edition or unique, when, and in what condition — because everything else follows from the answer. A valuation is free, made online from the photographs you send, and it commits you to nothing. We act for sellers across the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States.

Bio

Nathan Oliveira (1928–2010) was born in Oakland, California, to Portuguese immigrant parents. He studied at the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland, taking his MFA in 1952, and in the summer of 1950 studied with Max Beckmann at Mills College. He is often associated with the Bay Area Figurative Movement but remained independent of it, and he made an early reputation with isolated figures painted in an improvisational style, expressive in form, colour and line. A Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation grant in 1957 took him further into lithography, and a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1958 let him travel to Europe. He taught at Stanford University from 1964. He became interested in monotype around 1972, after seeing a catalogue of Degas's monotypes, and was especially noted for the medium; the California Palace of the Legion of Honor organised a survey of his monotypes in 1997. He was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1994, and his work is in the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Art Institute of Chicago.

His work spans oil paintings, monotypes, lithographs, etchings and aquatints, drawings and sculpture. A monotype is a single impression, so check the signature and date. For an edition print, note the edition number, the publisher, such as Crown Point Press, and the paper, and keep any gallery invoice with the work.
