Send photographs and whatever paperwork came with it. The first question is what the work actually is — edition or unique, when, and in what condition — because everything else follows from the answer. Bio
Nigel Cooke was born in Manchester in 1973. He studied at Nottingham Trent University from 1991 to 1994, took an MA in painting at the Royal College of Art from 1995 to 1997 and completed a PhD in fine art at Goldsmiths in 2004, and he has been a visiting lecturer at the Royal College of Art. He lives and works in Kent. His paintings set carnivalesque figures in harsh landscapes littered with urban decay, and skulls, derelict buildings and bilious, toxic greens add to a sense of foreboding. They develop over a long period and are built up in many layers of oil paint, setting vast areas of colour against obsessively detailed figuration; more recent works bring in large, sweeping gestural marks. Tate Britain showed him in its Art Now series, where his grand canvases were read against the tradition of landscape painting and the sublime. His work is in the collections of Tate, the Museum of Modern Art and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, and he is represented by Pace Gallery in New York and London and Blum & Poe in Los Angeles.
His paintings are in oil on canvas, often on a large scale. Layered oil paint should be checked for cracking, scuffs and any retouching, and a big canvas needs care whenever it is moved. A buyer will want the title, the date and the gallery invoice.
