Send photographs and whatever paperwork came with it. The first question is what the work actually is — edition or unique, when, and in what condition — because everything else follows from the answer. Bio

Patricia Leite was born in Belo Horizonte, the capital of Minas Gerais, in 1955, and studied fine art at the Federal University of Minas Gerais, where she was one of a group of young painters from the city. She now lives and works in São Paulo. Her paintings begin with photographs she takes on journeys, stills from video and memory, and reduce a landscape, a sky, a tree, a road or a building to a few broad, simplified shapes of strong colour, somewhere between the tradition of landscape painting and pop. For most of her career she showed mainly in Brazil; in recent years she has had solo exhibitions at Mendes Wood DM in New York in 2022, Thomas Dane Gallery in London in 2024 and the Fondazione Bevilacqua La Masa in Venice in 2025, and her work is in the Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo and the Museu de Arte da Pampulha.

Many of her paintings are on wood panel, usually small to medium in size, with others on canvas. Provenance through Mendes Wood DM, which represents her, and the date of the painting are the main points of identification, and panels should be checked for knocks at the edges and corners, where paint on wood is most easily lost.

Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais and São Paulo

Her exhibition at Mendes Wood DM in Brussels in 2018 took as its subject the eighteenth-century churches of Minas Gerais, the state she comes from.

Her work has been shown at the Kunsthalle Wien and the Estação Pinacoteca in São Paulo, and is in the collection of Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary.
