What a work by Leonardo da Vinci is worth

Send photographs and whatever paperwork came with it. The first question is what the work actually is — edition or unique, when, and in what condition — because everything else follows from the answer. A valuation is free, made online from the photographs you send, and it commits you to nothing. We act for sellers across the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States.

Bio

Leonardo da Vinci (1452–1519) was born near Vinci, outside Florence, and trained in the workshop of Andrea del Verrocchio, where he painted one of the angels in Verrocchio's Baptism of Christ. In the early 1480s he moved to Milan to work for Ludovico Sforza, and painted The Last Supper on the refectory wall of Santa Maria delle Grazie in 1495–98; back in Florence he began the Mona Lisa, which he kept with him for the rest of his life and which is now in the Louvre. He was as much engineer, anatomist and inventor as painter, and filled notebooks with studies of water, flight, machines and the human body. He spent his last years in France, in the service of Francis I. Fewer than twenty paintings are generally accepted as his, and several of them are unfinished.

Paintings by Leonardo are almost all in museums, and when one has come to market, as the rediscovered Salvator Mundi did in 2017, its attribution has been debated as fiercely as its price. His drawings are mostly in institutions too, above all the Royal Collection at Windsor, which holds more than five hundred. What does appear is the work of the Leonardeschi, the Milanese painters who worked with him or in his manner, such as Giovanni Antonio Boltraffio, Bernardino Luini and Salaì, and the many copies and versions of his compositions made in the sixteenth century and later, the Mona Lisa among them. Telling a studio version from a later copy, and a follower's hand from Leonardo's, depends on technical study and documented history.
