Bio
Paul Wackers was born in New Haven, Connecticut, in 1978, trained in Washington and San Francisco, and works in Brooklyn. The paintings are still lifes of a particular kind: shelving units and tabletops crowded with houseplants, ceramics, books, mirrors and unidentifiable objects, painted in flat patterned planes with the perspective deliberately collapsed so that the shelf, the wall and the objects occupy the same surface. The mood is domestic and slightly airless, and the arrangements read as portraits of a room rather than of the things in it.
A market built principally through gallery and art-fair sales with a relatively short auction record, so provenance to the original gallery is the strongest documentation most works carry and recent private comparables matter more than the salerooms. Unique acrylics on canvas and on panel lead, with the larger and more crowded compositions ahead of the small studies. Print editions exist in modest numbers. The surfaces are flat, matt, unvarnished acrylic and show scuffs and retouching readily.
Washington, the Bay Area and Brooklyn
Wackers took a BFA at the Corcoran College of Art and Design in Washington and an MFA at the San Francisco Art Institute, and in 2009 won the Tournesol Award from the Headlands Center for the Arts in Sausalito. After several years in the Bay Area he moved to Brooklyn, and he has painted a large public mural for The James Hotel in New York.
He has had several solo exhibitions with Morgan Lehman Gallery in New York and with Jack Hanley Gallery, and his other recent solo shows include Silent Language at Galeria Impakto in Lima in 2018, In a House of Shifting Forms at Alice Gallery in Brussels in 2019 and The Space We Take at Eleanor Harwood Gallery in San Francisco in 2021.
