Paints shelves — plants, pots, books and objects arranged in flattened, patterned interiors.
Paul Wackers was born in Ohio in 1978, studied in San Francisco and at Tyler School of Art, and has worked in New York for most of his career. The paintings are still lifes of a particular kind: shelving units and tabletops crowded with houseplants, ceramics, books, mirrors and unidentifiable objects, painted in flat patterned planes with the perspective deliberately collapsed so that the shelf, the wall and the objects occupy the same surface. The mood is domestic and slightly airless, and the arrangements read as portraits of a room rather than of the things in it.
A market built principally through gallery and art-fair sales with a relatively short auction record, so provenance to the original gallery is the strongest documentation most works carry and recent private comparables matter more than the salerooms. Unique acrylics on canvas and on panel lead, with the larger and more crowded compositions ahead of the small studies. Print editions exist in modest numbers. The surfaces are flat, matt, unvarnished acrylic and show scuffs and retouching readily.
