Pez is a Barcelona street artist whose signature is a wide-grinning fish, painted from the early 2000s across the shutters, walls and hoardings of the Raval and beyond until the character became one of the most recognised images in the city. The style is flat, bright and deliberately cheerful, and it spread outwards from the fish into a cast of related characters. Like most artists who built a following on the street, the studio work came later and the market for it is younger than the reputation.
The output is mostly acrylic and spray on canvas and board, plus screenprint editions, and a quantity of collaborative product. Editions are the part most often misunderstood: signing and numbering conventions vary between publishers and some runs were issued in several colourways, so the sheet needs reading rather than assuming. Unique canvases carry the value. Documentation from the original point of sale matters more here than for an artist with a long gallery record, because much of the early work was sold directly.
