What a work by Rainer Fetting is worth

Send photographs and whatever paperwork came with it. The first question is what the work actually is — edition or unique, when, and in what condition — because everything else follows from the answer. A valuation is free, made online from the photographs you send, and it commits you to nothing. We act for sellers across the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States.

Bio

Rainer Fetting was born in Wilhelmshaven in 1949 and trained as a carpenter and a stage designer before studying painting at the Hochschule der Künste in Berlin from 1972 to 1978. In 1977, with Helmut Middendorf, Salomé, Bernd Zimmer and others, he founded the Galerie am Moritzplatz, an artist-run gallery where they showed loud, colourful figurative painting at a time when minimal and conceptual art held sway; the group became known as the Neue Wilde, or Junge Wilde, and was celebrated internationally in the early 1980s. A DAAD scholarship took him to New York in 1978, and he lived between New York and Berlin from 1983 to 1994. He is openly gay, and male desire is a subject in several of his paintings. Alongside painting he makes sculpture in bronze, including a statue of Willy Brandt for the Willy Brandt Haus in Berlin, and he lives and works in Berlin and on the island of Sylt.

Paintings on canvas from the Moritzplatz years and the early 1980s are the best known, and his output also includes works on paper, prints and bronzes. For a bronze, the cast number and foundry should be confirmed; for a painting, exhibition labels and the gallery that sold it help to place the date.
