Schoony valuation
A special-effects sculptor by trade, and Boy Soldier is the piece everyone knows.
Schoony came to fine art from film, having worked for years in prosthetics and special effects, and the technical background is the defining fact of the work: the figures are lifecast from real people rather than modelled, which is why they read as uncannily particular rather than generic. Boy Soldier — a child in military dress, cast from life — is the piece that made the name and has been shown and editioned repeatedly since.
The output is sculpture in editions, in resin, bronze and other finishes, with unique and hand-finished variants alongside the standard runs. Edition size, material and finish all separate works that look similar in a photograph, and the base and its markings are usually where the identification sits. Condition on resin and painted surfaces is its own question — these are not bronzes and do not forgive handling in the same way. Original certificates matter.
