Dana Schutz was born in Livonia, Michigan, in 1976 and studied at the Cleveland Institute of Art and at Columbia University. Her paintings are dense, brightly coloured, expressionist compositions of invented situations — people eating themselves, swimming, sneezing, fighting, building — in which bodies and objects collide in cramped space. She has had museum surveys in the United States and Europe, and has more recently made sculpture as well.
Paintings dominate, with drawings, works on paper and a limited number of prints and editions. Title, date and dimensions matched to the gallery's records identify a painting, and provenance through the artist's galleries is the norm for significant works. The paintings are thickly worked in places, so impasto, cracking and any surface damage need checking, and works on paper need the usual care with light.
