Yoon Hyup valuation
Korean painter whose dots and lines come out of skateboarding and jazz.
Yoon Hyup was born in Seoul in 1982 and works between Korea and New York. The visual system is consistent and instantly recognisable: fields of dots and connecting lines that build into figures, cityscapes and abstract rhythms, derived by his own account from skateboarding, from street culture and from the structure of jazz. The results read as pattern and resolve into image at a distance.
Unique acrylic works on canvas lead, with works on paper, editions and a considerable body of brand collaboration and product below them — the last of which circulates widely and is regularly presented as studio work. Establishing which is which is the first step in any valuation. The paintings are flat and evenly worked with fine linear detail, so surface damage and retouching are conspicuous. Documentation from the gallery or original release should accompany a piece.
