What a work by Kudzanai-Violet Hwami is worth
Send photographs and whatever paperwork came with it. The first question is what the work actually is — edition or unique, when, and in what condition — because everything else follows from the answer. A valuation is free, made online from the photographs you send, and it commits you to nothing. We act for sellers across the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States.

Bio
Kudzanai-Violet Hwami was born in Gutu, Zimbabwe, in 1993, lived there until she was nine and then in South Africa, and moved to London at seventeen. She took a BFA in painting at Wimbledon College of Arts in 2016 and an MFA at the Ruskin School of Art in Oxford in 2021. She builds her paintings from collaged images, found photographs, family pictures and images gathered online, into composite figures and scenes about Black bodies, sexuality, gender identity and the experience of diaspora, in bright, layered colour. She held her first solo exhibition in London in 2016, showed in Zimbabwe's pavilion at the Venice Biennale in 2019, and was included in Allied with Power at the Pérez Art Museum Miami.
Her paintings have appeared at auction in recent years; provenance through her gallery and exhibition history are the usual checks.
Gutu, London and Venice
Apollo magazine named her in its 40 Under 40 Africa list in 2020, and her work is in the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa in Cape Town.
She has described spending much of her early adolescence online, where she first explored sexuality and gender identity and began collecting the images her paintings are built from.
