What a work by Andreas Slominski is worth

Send photographs and whatever paperwork came with it. The first question is what the work actually is — edition or unique, when, and in what condition — because everything else follows from the answer. A valuation is free, made online from the photographs you send, and it commits you to nothing. We act for sellers across the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States.

Bio

Andreas Slominski was born in Meppen, in Lower Saxony, in 1959, abandoned a philosophy degree and studied at the Hochschule für bildende Künste in Hamburg from 1983 to 1986. He made his name with traps: working animal traps, from vole traps to large snares, built or found and shown as sculpture, at once usable objects and comments on the way art lures its audience. Bicycles, windmills, found objects and elaborate, absurd actions followed, in the line of Duchamp's readymades, and from 2006 he added painting and reliefs, swapping the marble of a classical relief for polystyrene and the subjects of painting for kitsch motifs and colours. Since 2009 he has also hung garage doors on the wall like paintings. He taught at Karlsruhe and in 2004 succeeded Franz Erhard Walther as professor at the Hamburg academy.

The traps, the reliefs and the garage doors are unique objects, often built of ordinary or fragile materials, and polystyrene in particular dents and discolours, so condition should be judged in person. Many works depend on a set arrangement or on an action that was performed with them, and a photograph of the work as first installed, with its title and date, keeps its meaning attached. Thaddaeus Ropac represents him.
