What a work by Penny Siopis is worth
Send photographs and whatever paperwork came with it. The first question is what the work actually is — edition or unique, when, and in what condition — because everything else follows from the answer. A valuation is free, made online from the photographs you send, and it commits you to nothing. We act for sellers across the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States.

Bio
Penny Siopis was born in Vryburg, South Africa, in 1953, to Greek parents. She studied fine art at Rhodes University, completing a master's degree in 1976, and went on to postgraduate study at Portsmouth Polytechnic in England. She taught in Durban and, from 1984, at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, and she lives in Cape Town, where she is an honorary professor at the Michaelis School of Fine Art. She came to prominence in the early 1980s with her cake paintings, in thick impasto, followed by history paintings that were read as a form of resistance to apartheid. Since then her work, across a wide range of materials and processes, has dealt with memory and truth, the body, grief and shame, migration and, more recently, climate change.
Paintings, works on paper and films all appear. Some of her paintings use unusual materials whose surfaces can be fragile, so condition should be checked, and a gallery invoice and the date of the work place it within her output.
Whitebank Fine Art is an art advisory and gallery, not an auction house, and is not affiliated with any auction house or with the artist, their estate or their representatives. This page describes the range we advise on. Nothing here is investment advice.
