Send photographs and whatever paperwork came with it. The first question is what the work actually is — edition or unique, when, and in what condition — because everything else follows from the answer. Bio

Joan Snyder was born in Highland Park, New Jersey, in 1940, studied sociology at Douglass College and took her MFA at Rutgers University in 1966. She made her name in the early 1970s with the Stroke paintings, in which bright, separate brushstrokes are laid out across a grid as if to take painting apart and tell its story again, and they were shown in the Whitney Biennials of 1973 and 1981. Against the cool abstraction of the time she wanted, as she has said, more in painting rather than less, and her canvases took on autobiography, written words, recurring images of roses, breasts, ponds, moons and screaming faces, and materials such as lentils, gauze, thread, glitter, straw and mud, from a self-consciously female point of view. Her later work falls into the Symphony paintings, built like music, and the Field paintings, which grew out of the farmland she moved to in the mid-1980s. She is a MacArthur Fellow and a Guggenheim Fellow.

Her paintings are often heavily built up with collage and organic materials, so condition, lifting and the stability of attached elements need checking, and they should not be rolled. The Stroke paintings of the early 1970s are the most sought after, and the date, the series and the exhibition history identify a work. She has also made many prints, woodcuts and etchings among them, and works on paper. Thaddaeus Ropac represents her.
