What a work by Berlinde De Bruyckere is worth
Send photographs and whatever paperwork came with it. The first question is what the work actually is — edition or unique, when, and in what condition — because everything else follows from the answer. A valuation is free, made online from the photographs you send, and it commits you to nothing. We act for sellers across the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States.

Bio
Berlinde De Bruyckere was born in Ghent in 1964 and graduated from the LUCA School of Arts in Ghent in 1986. In the 1990s she moved away from minimal sculpture in stone, wood, steel and concrete towards figurative work in soft, organic materials, beginning with cage-like structures lined with blankets, a response to images of famine in Somalia and war in Kosovo and Rwanda. Around 1999 figures hidden under blankets appeared, followed by headless or long-haired nudes in pigmented wax. In the same year research for the In Flanders Fields Museum, and its photographs of dead war horses, led to her horse sculptures, built on moulds taken from horses and covered in horse skin from a tanner. She showed Black Horse at the Venice Biennale in 2003, represented Belgium there in 2013 alongside the writer J. M. Coetzee, and in 2024 showed City of Refuge III at the Abbazia di San Giorgio Maggiore. MoMA, S.M.A.K. in Ghent and M HKA in Antwerp hold her work. She lives and works in Ghent, with her studio in a former Catholic school.
Her sculptures are unique works in wax, horse skin, blankets, wood and metal, and she also makes drawings and watercolours. Wax and skin are sensitive to heat, light and handling, so a buyer will want to know how a sculpture has been stored, moved and displayed, and whether anything has been repaired. A gallery invoice and the date of the work should go with it.
