Bio
Jonas Burgert was born in West Berlin in 1969 and studied at the Universität der Künste in Berlin from 1991 to 1996, becoming a master student of Dieter Hacker in 1997. He lives and works in Berlin. His early wall-sized paintings were ornamental, built from patterns that suggest oriental motifs and cell structures, with quotations from ancient Egyptian tomb painting; from 2003 animals, and then people, began to appear in them. The large paintings since are dense, theatrical scenes in which figures resembling shamans, commedia dell'arte players and skeletons from old woodcuts gather among ordinary city people, in rites whose meaning is never explained. His work is in collections including the Hamburger Kunsthalle, the Sammlung Falckenberg in Hamburg and the Saatchi Collection.
The paintings range from very large canvases to small studies, and drawings also appear. Large canvases need careful handling and storage, so their condition and how they have been kept should be checked, and a gallery invoice and the date of the work should go with them.
